Bad bot traffic has grown year over year, and automated abuse - scrapers, credential stuffing, and API abuse - drives downtime, fraud, and skewed analytics. This guide covers high-level best practices that every site and application should consider, with a focus on bot and scraper protection that works at the edge.

  • HTTPS everywhere – Encrypt traffic; use TLS 1.3 where possible and enforce HSTS.
  • Keep software updated – CMS, frameworks, plugins, and dependencies. Unpatched software remains a top vector for compromise.

Protection that combines request-level checks (at your server or CDN) with on-page behaviour (e.g. a small SDK) can allow, challenge, or block in real time - typically in under 50 ms - so real users stay unaffected while bad traffic is stopped before it hits your origin.

Bot and scraper protection: check at the edge

A practical approach for 2026:

  1. Check each request – Before serving the page, call a check-request API (Bot Protection) from your server or CDN with client IP, path, and optional headers. Get back allow, challenge, or block. On timeout or error, fail open so users are not locked out.
  2. Add behaviour on the page – Load a lightweight script that sends behaviour and device signals (Bot Detection) to your security API. This improves classification (human vs bot, crawler vs scraper) and powers analytics.
  3. Challenge only when needed – Use an invisible or low-friction challenge (e.g. taCAPTCHA proof-of-work or Code Captcha) only when the request check returns “challenge.” Real users rarely see it; bots and scrapers are filtered or challenged.
